Tobago

Pigeon Point, TobagoJust 25 miles long and 8 miles wide, Tobago is widely recognised as the jewel in the Caribbean crown. It is the island that inspired Daniel Defoe’s wonderful novel Robinson Crusoe.

Located at the southernmost end of the Caribbean Sea, Tobago is the smaller partner in the twin-island Republic of Trinidad & Tobago. Located just off the coast of Venezuela, Trinidad is a much larger island with substantial oil and gas reserves and more dynamic and vibrant feel. Tobago’s industry, on the other hand, is limited to tourism and the island has a totally different and more laid-back vibe. It is undoubtedly the ultimate ‘chill-out’ destination.

Getting to Tobago couldn’t be easier. There are direct flights from the UK via British Airway, Virgin Atlantic and Monarch and from Germany via Condor. A reliable 20-minute subsidised air bridge service connects Tobago’s A.N.R.Robinson International Airport with the larger International Airport, Piarco, outside Trinidad’s capital, Port of Spain. Caribbean Airlines, American Airlines, Continental and Delta all offer regular schedules to Piarco from various locations in the USA and Canada. LIAT, the Caribbean Airline, connects most of the Lesser Antilles through Trinidad (Caribbean Airlines) to Tobago.

Tobago is a cool and serene island with sandy beaches and a lush tropical mountainous rainforest interior. Driving around the island couldn’t be simpler and is one of the island’s most popular visitor attractions. In fact because the island is so undeveloped, very few hotels, guest houses or rental homes are within walking distance of a choice of restaurants, beaches and other facilities. A self-drive rental car is essential if you are to get the best out of Tobago and will invariably work out more economical, and considerably more convenient, than relying on expensive private taxis.

We recommend visitors interested in bird watching, turtles, ecology, or who would like to explore Tobago, to internationally recognised field naturalist and local environmentalist Peter Cox. Details of his services can be found on his website at www.TobagoNatureTours.com.
